If you’re fit and healthy, health insurance can sometimes seem like an unnecessary expense. New Zealand has a great public healthcare system after all, which will take care of you in an emergency or if you have a serious medical condition. So what’s to be gained from paying for health insurance? Well, it’s a question that we are often asked here at Cave Financial and so in this article we look at the benefits of taking out health insurance.

If you're fit and healthy, health insurance can sometimes seem like an unnecessary expense. New Zealand has a great public healthcare system after all, which will take care of you in an emergency or if you have a serious medical condition. So what's to be gained from paying for health insurance? Well, it's a question that we are often asked here at Cave Financial and so in this article we look at the benefits of taking out health insurance.

Peace of mind: None of us anticipates falling ill or suffering an accident, but the truth is that such things can and do happen. However, if you or a family member were to become unwell or disabled wouldn't you want timely access to quality medical care? Well, health insurance provides that peace of mind. You can be confident that whether your needs are big or small, your condition is chronic or acute, prompt treatment is available. Health insurance provides protection for you and your family from the unexpected.

Faster access to treatment: Health insurance will give you faster access to treatment by avoiding public hospital waiting lists. In the public healthcare system resources are often stretched and demand is high, resulting in long waits for appointments and treatment. This is especially so when it comes to diagnosing and treating non-urgent medical conditions. You may not die from your in-grown toenail, for example, but it can be downright uncomfortable to live with for an extended period of time. Taking out health insurance ensures faster access to treatment so that you can get back on your feet that much quicker.

More choice: And when it comes to receiving that treatment, health insurance gives you greater control over the time and location. You can arrange your appointments and treatment around your family or work schedules, giving you greater control and certainty.

Less financial stress: The costs of private medical treatment can be huge. Being diagnosed with a condition can be a stressful enough time in itself without the worry of how you are going to pay your medical bills on top. In addition, there's the extra burden of having to take time off work to attend appointments and treatment as well as recuperating. By comparison, the manageable monthly health insurance premiums are a much more cost-effective and stress-free option.

Flexibility: Most health insurance providers allow for multiple claims and so you are covered for the same condition or new ones throughout your lifetime. In addition, there's the option to self-manage premiums. As we get older, premiums typically rise in cost, however, excess options allow you to manage these rising costs still with the security of having the main part of your medical bill covered by insurance.

Health insurance – it's a no-brainer

Protecting and safeguarding your health and that of your family has to be a top priority. And for a relatively small monthly outlay, health insurance gives you peace of mind and absolute confidence that you are protected should the unthinkable happen. Now that's an investment worth making.

  • I cannot recommend Michael and the team at Cave Financial highly enough. They steered me through a complicated set of mortgage applications with professionalism, good cheer, and were incredibly prompt with every query I made. On top of that they negotiated a better rate!
