Having private health insurance is important for many reasons. One of the most important is that It provides the funding to enable you to have private medical treatment whenever you require more immediate access or a broader range of treatment options than are available to you through the Public health system.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that uninsured people receive lower levels of medical care as well as less prompt care and a lack of private insurance can be a financial burden for them and their families if they need to seek treatment outside the Public health system. Whilst our Public health system offers good access, it does not fully substitute for health insurance.
We thought you would be interested in seeing medical claims statistics published by Nib NZ Ltd for 2016. It is interesting to note the wide range of treatments and medical procedures covered and the considerable costs associated with many of these. The spread of treatments across all age groups may help to dispel the misconception that health insurance is only something that older people need to consider.
